Pakistan’s crackdown on Imran Khan and his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party has expanded from criminal prosecutions and imprisonment into a broader contest over political authority, protest rights, and provincial autonomy. Khan remains jailed at Adiala, while authorities have restricted demonstrations, detained relatives and party figures, and imposed security controls around the prison, measures the government frames as necessary to prevent unrest and PTI disputes as political repression. The federal suspension of PTI’s elected government in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, justified by militant violence and failures of law and order, has intensified concerns over the use of security powers against an opposition stronghold. Courts are also being pressed to weigh detention conditions, family access, and official authority. The central stakes are Khan’s political future, PTI’s ability to mobilize, civilian institutions’ independence, and the balance between security and democratic governance.
