India Holds Back Starlink Approval

Starlink’s planned entry into India remains stalled between digital connectivity ambitions and stringent telecom and national-security controls. The company has secured key licences, space-sector approval, and built 20 gateway sites, but commercial service still requires completion of security assessments, compliance with lawful-interception and data-control rules, and final spectrum assignment. Elon Musk has alleged that powerful domestic business interests are obstructing the launch, while the Indian government rejects claims of discriminatory treatment and says Starlink, Reliance-backed Jio Satcom, and Bharti-backed Eutelsat OneWeb face the same requirements. The dispute matters because satellite broadband could expand access in underserved rural areas, while regulators seek control over foreign operators, user terminals, data, and emergency restrictions. The timing and outcome of the remaining clearances remain uncertain.
