India’s debate over One Nation One Election is really about balancing administrative efficiency with the realities of a large federal democracy. Supporters say synchronized polls could cut costs, reduce campaign fatigue, and give governments more time to focus on policy instead of repeated election cycles. But the idea also raises hard questions about constitutional change, the durability of state governments, and how to protect federal autonomy if national and state terms are tied together. That tension is why the proposal keeps returning to the political agenda without easy agreement, even as the government moves to build a legal framework for it.
