Delhi in 2025 became a city under siege from its own air. It logged zero Good AQI days for the first time under US EPA standards. Winter peaks hit hazardous 400 to 700 as toxic smog choked streets and schoolyards. Landlocked in the Indo-Gangetic plain, cold inversions trap emissions like a lid on a boiling pot. Stubble smoke from Punjab-Haryana farm fires rolls in October-November. It mixes with Delhi's vehicle exhaust (23%), dust storms from construction (15%), and secondary particles from gases (27%) (Dive deeper in 'Stakeholders'). CM Rekha Gupta's BJP government launched a flashy 25-point Mitigation Plan in June. This included EV truck mandates via ANPR cameras, 1000+ sprinklers, cloud-seeding pilots. But Diwali fireworks on October 21 defied green cracker rules, spiking AQI severe overnight. Protests erupted at India Gate on November 9 as families gasped through masks. 80 were detained amid cries of govt inaction. GRAP Stage 3-4 brought construction halts, office staggering till February 2026. Yet Bloomberg clocked 88% hazardous days Nov-Dec, worst since 2017. By year-end, AQI.in tallied 110 Poor, 52 Severe, 33 Hazardous days. No breath of fresh air. This fueled blame games between BJP, opposition, and UNEP warnings of disaster 35x over WHO limits.
